Reading at Orion Education

Reading at Orion Education

At Orion Education, we believe reading is central to improving outcomes, transforming lives and enabling social mobility. From a child’s first day in school, reading is nurtured as both a vital life skill and a source of enjoyment, curiosity and imagination.

We want every child to become a fluent, confident reader who chooses to read and can use reading to access the full curriculum. Carefully selected, high‑quality texts sit at the heart of learning across all subjects, supporting children to communicate clearly, think deeply and develop strong understanding of the world around them.

Our ambitious reading curriculum is carefully sequenced from early years onwards, ensuring consistency, progression and high expectations for all. Guided by our values of trust, kindness and endeavour, we ensure children see themselves reflected in books while also discovering new perspectives and possibilities. Through reading, children learn to succeed at school and beyond.

How We Promote Reading for Pleasure at Orion Education

At Orion Education, we believe that learning to read well and reading for pleasure go hand in hand. From Nursery to Sixth Form, reading is a daily, shared and celebrated part of school life. We combine high-quality teaching with rich reading experiences so that students and young people see reading not just as a skill, but as a source of enjoyment, curiosity and connection.

We promote a reading for pleasure by:

  • Placing stories at the heart of the school day, through daily story time, class novels and shared reading experiences across all phases.
  • Giving students choice and agency, encouraging them to select books that reflect their interests, identities and passions, so reading feels personal and motivating.
  • Ensuring access to high-quality, diverse texts, with well-resourced libraries, classroom book corners and pupil voice shaping book selection.
  • Creating a visible reading culture, where staff model reading, talk about books and act as reading role models for students and young people.
  • Making reading social, through book talk, reading buddies, ambassadors and shared reading in tutor time and across the curriculum.
  • Celebrating reading in all its forms, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, magazines and digital texts, recognising that reading looks different for every student.
  • Connecting reading to the wider world, helping pupils see how reading links to their interests, learning and future opportunities.
