Spires Academy Celebrates World Book Day!

It was great to celebrate World Book Day at Spires Academy this year. The preparations started early as we had been invited to join a Community Read project which saw some staff and ex-Sturry Primary school pupils film themselves reading a story for part of the primary school’s project.

Ms Colton put together some activities for English lessons and all the classrooms on Orange floor (home of the English and Humanities departments) transformed their doors and themed them as books. The students seemed to enjoy the surprise as they arrived and the corridors certainly looked very bright and colourful.

Classes who had lessons in the library were able to choose from lots of activities: Author Top Trumps, Picture Scavenger Hunt, Create a Book in a Box, Name the Character and Guess a Book by its Cover quizzes. There were Read and Do challenges with Lego, an Authors and Illustrators corner enabling students to let their creative juices flow and a Turbo Shelf Stacking competition against the clock.

The library was buzzing all day and it was amazing to see so many students engaged. Winners will receive autographed books as prizes.

A £1 Book voucher was handed out to students, allowing students to exchange their token for one of the specially produced £1 book titles at any book shop or to use their £1 voucher as part payment towards any other book of their choosing. It was a fantastic day of celebrating reading and we look forward to building upon this.
