This January, as we celebrated National Mentoring Month, we are highlighting the diverse programmes at Ravensbourne School that foster student well-being and academic success. These initiatives prioritise peer support, open communication, and personalised guidance, creating a nurturing environment where every student feels empowered to thrive.
Peer Mentorship: Empowering Older Students, Supporting Younger Peers
Our Peer Mentoring programme taps into the power of positive connections. Year 10-13 students, trained in safeguarding and mental health awareness, serve as mentors to younger students navigating challenges.
Mentoring sessions provide a safe space for open conversation and offer valuable guidance from peers who have navigated similar experiences. This programme fosters empathy, responsibility, and leadership skills in mentors, while offering younger students invaluable support and a sense of belonging.
Breakfast and Lunchtime Well-being Lounge: A Safe Haven for Connection and Relaxation
The Well-being Lounge, open daily before and during school hours, offers a dedicated space for students seeking community and support. Access is granted through recommendations from the pastoral team, ensuring those who need it most can benefit from this inclusive environment.
Free breakfast snacks, a relaxed atmosphere, and access to counsellors foster a sense of belonging and normalcy for students facing various challenges. This initiative demonstrates Ravensbourne's commitment to supporting diverse needs and creating a welcoming environment for all.
Whole-School Resources: Raising Awareness and Celebrating Diversity
Ravensbourne celebrates diversity and promotes mental health awareness through engaging initiatives. School-wide assemblies cater to specific year groups, while displays and resources mark important dates like World Mental Health Day and LGBTQ+ History Month. These initiatives break down stigmas, encourage open dialogue, and create a culture of understanding and inclusivity.
Beyond School Walls: Partnering with Bromley Y for Additional Support
Ravensbourne recognises that sometimes external support is needed. We partner with Bromley Y, providing students with access to counselling, workshops, and additional mentoring opportunities. This collaboration ensures students have access to personalised support beyond the school environment, empowering them to navigate challenges and reach their full potential.
Staff Support: Open Doors and Understanding Mentors
Our dedicated staff serves as an essential source of support for students. With an open-door policy and a genuine commitment to well-being, our teachers are available to listen, offer guidance, and act as mentors for students facing stress, anxiety, or other mental health concerns.
Time-out passes and flexible classroom policies further demonstrate Ravensbourne's understanding of diverse needs. Students struggling with large crowds can leave lessons early, and those experiencing temporary overwhelm can take brief breaks using a designated pass.
Looking Forward: Building a Stronger Support Network
Ravensbourne's commitment to student well-being extends beyond February. We're actively exploring initiatives to strengthen the existing support network:
- Mental Health Action Group: Creating a space for parents, students, and staff to discuss mental health, resources, and opportunities for further collaboration.
- Enhanced Staff Training: Providing continuous professional development opportunities to ensure all staff are equipped to identify and support students facing mental health challenges.
By celebrating our current initiatives and actively pursuing new pathways, Ravensbourne School strives to create a vibrant and supportive community where every student feels empowered, understood, and equipped to thrive
